Skunks
Believe it or not, the stinky skunk is one of our most beneficial animals. It is estimated that 70% of the skunks diet benefits people as it consists of mainly insects and small rodents such as mice. Despite this, skunks cause problems when they decide to live under our sheds, decks, and homes.
Procedure
Our skunk removal procedures begin with a free inspection and assessment of the situation. Solving a skunk problem usually requires digging around the perimeter of a structure such as a shed or deck. Screen is installed around the perimeter of the structure to effectively prevent re-entry. The removal procedure often involves carefully chasing the skunk out. In situations where this is not possible we rely on a specialized one-way door. This device allows the skunk to leave through the original entry point but effectively prevents re-entry. During baby season the process can be much more involved, often requiring a great deal of digging to remove the babies. Once the babies have been removed by hand they are put in a weatherproof box until mom can relocate them to a new den site.
Skunk Related Concerns & Diseases
Aside from the obvious odour which can cause nausea, eye irritation, and in some cases respiratory distress, skunks can carry some serious diseases:
-
Rabies is quite common in skunks and is transmitted through blood and saliva.
-
Distemper is common in skunks and may be transmittable to cats and dogs.
The best prevention is to vaccinate your pets and do not allow them to roam at large. If you suspect you or your pet have been in contact with a rabid animal call your areas Heath Unit and a veterinarian.
